Tyres & puncture repairs
Your tyres are the only part of the car touching the road, and the legal minimum tread in the UK is 1.6mm. At our Clare Street garage in E2 we check your tyres, repair punctures where it’s safe to, and fit replacements when it isn’t.
How we do it
A slow puncture or a worn tyre doesn’t always mean a new one. We’ll tell you honestly whether a repair is safe and legal, and if you do need a new tyre we’ll talk you through the options for your car and budget.
What’s included
- Tyre tread depth and condition check
- Puncture repairs where the damage is in the repairable area
- New tyres supplied and fitted
- Wheel balancing
- Tyre pressure check and adjustment
- Valve replacement
Signs you need new tyres
- Tread close to the 1.6mm legal limit (try the 20p test)
- Cracks, bulges or cuts in the sidewall
- Uneven wear on one edge of the tyre

Tyres questions
Still unsure? Call 07985 523903 and ask.
What is the legal minimum tyre tread depth?
In the UK, car tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round. Driving on illegal tyres can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each tyre. Many experts recommend replacing tyres before they reach 3mm.
Can a punctured tyre be repaired?
Often, yes. Under British Standard BS AU 159 a car tyre can be repaired if the damage is in the central part of the tread and no more than 6mm across. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder can’t be safely repaired, so the tyre must be replaced.
How do I do the 20p tyre test?
Put a 20p coin into the main tread grooves at several points around the tyre. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be close to or below the legal limit and you should have the tyre checked by a garage straight away.
